A clear and detailed community guide to reaching St. Barts’ legendary hidden bay.

Colombier Beach is not your average Caribbean stretch of sand. It’s the kind of beach you dream about—soft white sands untouched by commercial buildings, gentle waves perfect for swimming, and breathtaking natural beauty. It feels secret, secluded, exclusive. But to reach this hidden paradise, you’ll need to hike—or sail.

Why make the effort? Apart from its serene beauty, Colombier Bay is uniquely iconic. The entire bay has just one building: the elegant, storied Rockefeller Villa, originally built by David Rockefeller himself. This villa, discreetly nestled on a rocky point, creates an unmatched backdrop for your day on the sand, giving a sense of tranquility and timeless exclusivity that no other St. Barts beach offers.

So, how exactly do you hike there? The SaintBarth.com community weighs in with practical advice, local knowledge, and candid reflections on each trail.

🚶‍♂️ The Two Distinct Trails to Colombier

Colombier can be reached by two clearly different paths. Both have their fans and challenges:

🟢 Path #1: Coastal Trail from Petite Anse (Lower Path)

Where to Start:

  • Drive past Flamands Beach and continue until you reach the charming cove known as Petite Anse.
  • Park near the roadside just outside the Auberge de la Petite Anse hotel.
  • Walk along a gravel road toward the ocean; the path begins gently and hugs the coastline closely.

Trail Description:

Initially easy and scenic, this path soon becomes a rocky coastal trail, tracing along volcanic cliffs with clear views of turquoise waters below. It’s the more direct route, following close to the ocean’s edge, offering stunning views toward the Rockefeller estate and across Colombier Bay.

Community Advice:

💬 “The lower route starting at Flamands beach road is absolutely doable.”Jean-Pierre

💬 “Did this in flip-flops. It’s fine, but honestly, sneakers are way better!”Margarita

💬 “Easy to moderate in parts—wear a hat, sunscreen, and bring plenty of water.”Rebecca

What to know:

  • It’s a rocky trail, uneven volcanic terrain—flip-flops are strongly discouraged.
  • Bring ample water and sunscreen as there’s virtually no shade.

🔵 Path #2: Hilltop Trail from Colombier Hill (Upper Path)

Where to Start:

  • Begin from the viewpoint on top of Colombier Hill. To reach the trailhead, drive up toward the Colombier district and park in the designated parking area near the viewpoint above the bay.
  • Follow clear signage downhill, descending steeply toward Colombier Beach below.

Trail Description:

This path is shorter but steeper—it’s essentially a descent (and a subsequent ascent upon return!) down rocky, volcanic terrain. You’ll see expansive panoramic vistas of Colombier Bay from above, framed dramatically by the untouched hillside. It’s a direct vertical descent to paradise.

Community Advice:

💬 “This path is like one big staircase—it’s steep but very direct.”Nanda

💬 “I did it pregnant; it was fine but steep.”Devon

💬 “Ironically, going down takes longer than going back up. Watch your footing carefully.”Dan

What to know:

  • Wear sturdy shoes with grip. It’s volcanic, rocky terrain—no flat, paved trails here.
  • This route can be challenging for anyone uncomfortable with heights or steep slopes.

⚠️ Important Note: Trail Access and Recent Disputes

In December 2024, the coastal trail from Petite Anse was briefly blocked by a property owner who installed signs and barriers citing safety and liability concerns. The path is on private land, and a serious accident in 2023 increased concern around trail safety.

After a short closure and community discussions involving local authorities, the path was reopened—but signs marking the area as private property remain.

Please respect:

  • The trail crosses private property; the owner is understandably concerned about safety and legal responsibilities.
  • Stay strictly on marked paths and be mindful of your surroundings.
  • Avoid this route if uncertain about navigating rocky terrain, or if you have mobility concerns.

🧴 Packing Essentials: Community Recommendations

  • Water—more than you think you’ll need.
  • Proper footwear—sneakers or hiking sandals, not flip-flops.
  • Sun protection—sunscreen, hats, or portable shades.
  • Snacks and picnics—there are no facilities at Colombier.

💬 “Bring rosé and baguette sandwiches; you’ll want to stay for hours!”Eddie

💬 “It’s very humid with some good elevation. Well worth the effort!”Anne

🌅 Final Thoughts from Our Community

Most visitors agree the hike is entirely doable—but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Colombier is unspoiled precisely because it’s a little harder to reach.

💬 “I’m almost 60, and I’ve done it many times in Teva sandals.”Marie

💬 “The beach is spectacular and well worth any mild anxiety about steep trails.”Laura V.

💬 “I do not hike, and I managed it the day after my wedding. Totally worth it!”Callie

In short: hike prepared, respect local sensitivities, and savor one of St. Barts’ most exceptional—and carefully preserved—destinations.
